RSVP For 'Not' Burning Man 2021

So the Camp Roster has sort of been unofficial up until now, but we are reaching that point where we really need to get a solid head count of who is going. Please make sure to Register for our website, and then submit the RSVP Form here. Once you have submitted the RSVP Form, you should see your name appear here on the Camp Roster page. This is sort of your official notice that you are going. Think of it like buying a ticket. Only other registered users for the website can see the Roster. The roster is a list that lets us send mass email or texts to everyone. Please let me know if you have any trouble with registering or submitting the form! This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

At this point we just need to know precisely who is going. If there is anyone who has been on the fence or being a lurker here but has been thinking about going...now is the time to speak up. Also if you have a plus one who is planning on going, they also need to register and RSVP. There is no such thing as a 'Plus One' here at the Mycodelic Forest! I'm going to give us all two weeks to submit this form! That means after July 11th, there isn't going to be an automatic way of getting added! Get it done! I will send out a few more reminders...but also Radical Self Reliance!

We are going to Not Burning Man!

Rumors of Burning Man's demise have been greatly exagerrated! I just wanted to shoot out a quick post to let people know, in a somewhat official capacity, thaat Mycodelic Forest is going to That Thing In The Desert. The one formerly known as Burning Man also now commonly called the Renegade Burn or Not Burning Man. This will be the second year that this event will be taking place now without any organizing body. We've weighed the risks, and we think that as long as our group is fully vaccinated the risk is minimal to ourselves and others. BLM won't require a permit if there is no organzing body and we keep our individual group sizes under 50. If we do that, they can't cancel us.

There is something funny about the theme of this year's burn 'The Great Unknown' because the way things are shaking out, that really is the theme this year. At this stage in the game there are only a few things we know for sure:

  1. A lot of groups are planning on attending Not Burning Man
  2. Mycodelic Forest is one of them

There are still quite a few unknowns so I'll refrain from listing them all. But logistically we have a lot to figure out for services that the org normally provides. This Burn will be very different from regular Burning Man and who knows if it will ever happen again. Its scary, and exciting. Expect everything to be harder than it usually is. If you are interested please let people know ASAP.

See you in the dust!

Reminder about the hangout link

Just wanted to shoot out everyone a quick reminder that there is always a perpetual meeting space available at https://hangouts.mycodelicforest.org! This has actually been up for some time and has gone from redirecting users to Google Meet, To Talkie, and now to Zoom. We generally use that link for any camp meetings and for when you just want to see a friendly face.

To Burn or not to Burn?

Its hard to believe that its been an entre year since this whole COVID fiasco started! Its been filled with more plot twists than an M. Night Shamalan flick but there are finally some vaccines out there and people are asking the 40 million dollar question:

"Will Burning Man happen this year?"

The short answer is that no one knows. Burning Man doesn't ever get official approval for their permit until early August so pretty much every year its unknown whether we will get our permit. This year is much the same, but with even greater uncertainty. Things could go really well with the vaccine roll out and we could be home free by the Burn. Or things could go horribly wrong and leave us without much immunity by then.

If the official event doesn't happen, will there be another renegade event? Will that event be safe to risk going? What about throwing our own small event?

I can say that I really want to go, and I want to be optimistic about the possibility but there are a lot of unknowns. If we as a camp do want to attend Burning Man 2021, we will need to start making plans before we have the official word the event is happening. Ticketing refunds nearly bankrupted Burning Man Project last year -- I very much doubt they will be able to honor them this year. I would plan on not getting a refund for a ticket if the event is cancelled. That makes it pretty hard for our core team to secure DGS (Directed Group Sale) tickets because most years we purchase all the DGS tickets we are allocated and then later distribute them to camp members. This left a lot of us holding the bag last year. This year we are reccomending that no one buys two tickets unless someone has given you money for the second ticket. This is going to have the effect of pushing up the date that people need to decide to go quite a bit.

If enough people are interested in going to a Renegade Burn, or creating our own small event -- we could have that in our pocket as a backup plan if the event is cancelled again. We are not quite sure what 'small event' might mean but basically something that is composed entirely of our close friends with people who are practicing all the scientifically recomended social distancing measures.

Leadership for 2021 has started (slowly) getting our asses together. We have had a few meetings so far and are excited about a 2021 event but unsure where most of us stand. So as a result, we are planning a small online gathering in a few weeks which we are hoping to see everyone who has any wisp of an interest in going to a 2021 event. We want to hear how you all generally feel about 2021 and what kind of appetite everyone has for this nonsense.

Here are three things we need your opinion on:

  • Burning Man 2021
  • Renegade Burning Man 2021
  • Mycodelic Burn 2021

This date has not been set in stone, but shooting for a day / time on the weekend of Februrary 20th that would let everyone attend. If we don't see a big enough turnout -- Leadership will prob go back into our burrows and caves and save our time planning for convalescing. I wish you all well in this new year, may the odds be ever in our favor!

Get an invitation!

Hey fam! So I have been sadly staring at this GIANT stack of invitations for Burning Man 2020 Multiverse for quite a while now and I feel like they are going to waste on my shelf! We've decided we're gonna send out the invitations anyway, you can keep them as a souvenire or something. If you want an invitation, just register for an account on the website here and plop a good address in there. We are going to put a deadline on this for May 1st, so make sure you get this done before then if you want to get one. I am not going to share what they look like so its more mysterious :p

Love you all, stay safe out there!

Event Cancelled

Hey everyone. For those of you who have been living under a rock, Burning Man made the decision to pull the plug on this years event. Its been tough grappling with the reality of the situation which is that there is really no way to have the event safely without some very dramatic changes to our situation. We've been having this discussion behind the scenes in leadership for the last week and it was a relief to see the org make the call which we were dreading to make on our own.

I know that a lot of us have purchased DGS tickets and are wondering about refunds. I can tell you that refunds will be made available very soon.

We will be providing a full refund of camp dues to everyone who has sent them thus far. Leadership is currently working out a barebones budget we need to kick the can down the road and next steps will be getting together fundraising to cover those costs. It shouldn't be much. Ballpark is like 2 grand for Sojourner storage and Insurance.

There is talk of a 'Virtual' Burning Man. I have no fucking idea what thats going to be. No one has any idea what the fuck its going to be. If you think you would be interested in virtual Burning Man you can let me know and I'll try to keep people in the loop as to what Mycodelic Forest's plans are.

Even if Burning Man isn't happening, we can all live Burning Man right here in default world. Do what you can to help others and embody the 10 principles. Remember that we are all here for each other. Like seriously. If you need help, ask and we'll network that shit. <3

Social Distancing Daily Meetup

Given the somewhat dramatic changes to our social lives recently, I was thinking that it might be nice to have a daily virtual meetup for those of us who want to hang out a bit and socialize! I am proposing 7PM-8PM PST daily on Google Meet for anyone who wants to pop in! I will continue to keep the space open if people show! This is going to be super informal, and is just for fun not for Burning Man planning. If you have a few spare min I hope to see all your faces in the tubes! Tell a joke! Share crazy stories! Enjoy the imemdiacy of each other's company! See ya there!

If you'd like to suggest another time, or would like to keep the space open yourself at a different time let me know and we can arrainge it!

COVID-19 Update

I know that the COVID-19 Pandemic is on everyone's mind right now. I hope that everyone is taking the proper social distancing measures -- wheverer you might be in the world.  It looks like every single one of us is going to be impacted. No one should be panicking, but we should all be trying to avoid congregating and I encourage all of us to use the technology at our disposal to hang out virtually! This is going to be a real challenge but its critical for flattning the curve and reducing the stress on our Healthcare systems. Staying home can save lives! If you have any extra N95 masks please consider donating them.

With regards to Burning Man, I know everyone is dying to know: is it cancelled? Burning Man is still 171 days away. Thats a long time, but the truth is that at the moment no one really knows for sure what is going to happen. There have been lots of things in the past that have 'nearly' cancelled Burning Man and we usually don't receive our Permit until August. There is a lot of talk about about how the virus will burn out as we approach the summer heat, that intense UV light kills it, and that the Alkaline playa will make it difficult for the virus to survive in Black Rock City. While that could all be true, at this point its still speculation.

There is no reason at this point to think that the Burn will not be taking place. However, this could easily change in the future depending on how California and Nevada, the US, and the World in general are able to deal with the virus. Leadership in the Mycodelic Forest is continuing our 2020 planning cycle and are keeping a close eye on any new developments.

There has been a lot of chatter on the interwebs surrounding Burning Man Tickets and whether they will be refunded IF in the unlikely event that COVID-19 causes it to be cancelled. I don't know any more than you do, but the TOS basically says they are non-refundable. The org has not made an official position on this, but I don't want there to be any hard feelings or finger pointing if it turns out we will not get a refund. We don't know what is going to happen. If that makes you uncomfortable buying a ticket then please don't buy a ticket. We are still trying to gather as many people as possible who are willing to participate in the Main Sale and to purchase the full two tickets that are available. Myself, and a number of camp members have already participated in the DGS sale. We also are finding partners for the existing extra DGS tickets that we have with the goal of being able to make sure that everyone who wants to go can go.

With regards to Camp Dues, I'm just going to be up-front on the situation here. We are still encouraging people to pay their camp dues before the Main Sale for a reduced rate because we have some year round costs that need to be covered. In order to keep moving forward with plans, we need to have some cash on hand. Leadership has discussed the issue, and we decided that if the event does get cancelled that camp mates would be given the option to:

  • Donate your Camp Dues
  • Kick them forward to next year
  • Get reimbursed most of your dues minus our yearly overhead (Sojourner storage is pretty much our only cost) which we would equally distribute.

Please make sure to update your Mycodelic Forest website profile and your contact information so we have the most up to date info. If you already signed up with an account on our website go to https://mycodelicforest.org/Edit-user-details.html, or you can create an account at https://mycodelicforest.org/Join-us.html. We are cleaning the cobwebs out of the website and will be using it more actively moving forward.

Remember we are all in this together!
